Iowa State University’s Homecoming week is one of the best times to be a cyclone! There is so much going on in the town on Ames in general, but Homecoming week really brings out the true spirit of Iowa State.
The first Homecoming was proposed in 1912 by Professor Samuel Beyer, better known as Iowa State’s “patron of athletics.” It was then endorsed by President Raymond Pearson, who invited alumni to the event.
With 152 alumni returning back to campus for the first ever Iowa State Homecoming, it was deemed a success! Alumni celebrated with campus tours, a play, a football scrimmage, a pep meeting in Curtiss Auditorium, and on the morning before the big game, they were invited to a reception and luncheon at Margaret Hall to “get together and talk about old times.”
103 years later, Iowa State University’s Homecoming has grown into something truly amazing! Students and alumni celebrate with a food on campus, yell like hell contests, lawn displays, honors and awards, homecoming royalty, and much more all week long! Thousands of students, faculty, and alumni get involved to make it all happen.
It’s always a great day to be a cyclone, but Homecoming week is an extra exCYting time! This week, show off your cardinal and gold apparel, attend some of the great homecoming events, and get ready to cheer on the cyclones this Saturday!
