Finding the perfect backpack is perhaps one of the most important parts of preparing for back-to-school for your child or teen, and they may be right about that.
Have you ever picked up your child’s backpack after they return from school? Does it feel heavy? Backpacks that are too heavy can cause a great deal of problems for students, especially for growing kids. These problems include back and shoulder pain, and poor posture. The American Chiropractic Association recommends a backpack weigh no more than 10 percent of a child’s weight.
When on the hunt for the perfect backpack this school year, try to avoid a large one. Students are more likely to fill it all of the way up. Instead, the National Safety Council recommends the following:
- A size no wider or longer than the student’s torso, and not hanging more than 4 inches below the waist
- Padded straps
- Multiple compartments to distribute weight
- An ergonomic design
It’s also important to make sure your child is using both straps when carrying their backpack, and if some of the contents in the bag are not a necessity, leave them at home.
