What is Ordinance and Law coverage and why do I need it?
Ordinance & Law coverage provides
coverage for rebuilding a damaged or destroyed structure so it conforms
to the latest building codes. This expense can add 50% or more to
recovery costs.
Ordinance & Law coverage is typically
excluded in Commercial Property and Homeowner’s policies. This
exclusion is aimed at the application of building codes of various kinds
– construction, plumbing, fire safety, etc. that may require more
expensive reconstruction materials, installation, designs or methods
after the loss than those used in the existing building.
Areas of loss covered under Ordinance & Law
coverage are:
Loss of value of the
undamaged portion of a building that must be torn down or modified to
meet the current code requirements.
Cost of demolition and
removal of the debris of undamaged portions of the structure that must
be torn down or modified.
Increased cost of
reconstruction to meet current building codes.
