The days are getting longer and the temperature is getting warmer! This time of year is ideal for Iowan’s to get their bikes out and soak up the summer sun. Biking is very popular in Iowa, especially in July during Ragbrai. However, something that may cross your mind when it comes to getting out on your bike is, “Does insurance cover my bicycle?

In many cases, a bicycle or bike rack will be covered. However, coverage may vary depending on the circumstance. Here are 5 scenarios and the coverage provided for each one:

1. Your bicycle is damaged while it is secured to your vehicle: Filing a claim would be under the personal property provision of your Homeowners’ or Renters’ insurance policy.

2. Another vehicle damages your bicycle while it is secured to your vehicle: If liability is clear, then the other driver’s insurer will pay the full actual cash value of the bicycle. If the motorist is uninsured, the same full actual cash value will still be paid, but it will come from the owner’s uninsured motorist coverage.

3. A hit-and-run motorist damages your bicycle while it is attached to your vehicle: This claim would also be paid under the owner’s Homeowners’ or Renters’ policy.

4. Another person’s bicycle is damaged while it is secured to your vehicle: The liability portion of your Auto insurance will pay the actual cash value to the owner of the bicycle.

5. A bicycle attached to your vehicle is stolen: If a report is filed with the police, your Renters’ or Homeowners’ policy will pay the replacement cost value, less the deductible.
