Spring Cleaning: Time to Tackle the Dryer Vent

June 24, 2015

Even if you are diligent about emptying the dryer’s lint filter after each use, you need to clean the machine’s vent several times a year to minimize your risk of fire. There are 15,500 home fires annually caused by dryers.

Here’s one way to clean the dryer vent:

  • Unplug your dryer and slide the dryer away from the wall
  • Using a screwdriver, loosen the vent clamp behind the dryer. Slide the vent hose off.
  • Reach into the back of the machine and pull out any lint buildup. With your vacuum hose attachment, clear the vent hose, reconnect to the dryer.
  • Disconnect the other end of the vent hose from the wall; remove dust and lint as noted in Step 3 above. Reconnect the hose to the wall.
  • On the outside of your home, remove the louvered vent; clear duct and lint with a dryer vent brush or vacuum.

We recommend that you clean your dryer vents at least once if not twice per year. Lint is highly flammable and can be the culprit that causes a house fire. There are also several tools and brushes you can purchase to aid in the cleaning process. Here is a video of gentleman that uses a brush and a shop-vac to clean his dryer vent. Take a look!

Routine maintenance is important for every home's upkeep and well-being. Regular maintenance to your exterior, appliances, heating and cooling, plumbing, roof, and electrical systems will help prevent breakdowns, save money, and keep you and your family safe.
